A rigorous and intellectually stimulating department cultivating logical thinking, problem-solving, analytical skills, and interdisciplinary applications through pure and applied mathematics.
Overview
Although the programme is titled B.Sc. (Honours) Mathematics, it is a discipline that falls both in the category of Science and Humanities. Students of all streams - Science, Commerce, Humanities are eligible to apply provided Mathematics is one of their subjects in Class XII. Mathematics has rich potential as a platform for interdisciplinary study and application in almost all fields.
Teaching and Learning
The subject deals with the authenticity of processes rather than merely with conclusions. Mathematics students are trained in logical thinking and possess strong skills in formulating and solving complex problems. The strength of the department lies in its qualified, experienced, and committed faculty and their interaction with students. Positive peer relationship is one of the most valuable features of the department. The department aims to expose students to the joy of learning mathematics by giving them appropriate training in the emerging thrust areas related to both pure and applied mathematics.
Course Structure
Under the UGCF Curriculum 2022, the department offers Discipline Specific Core (DSC) Courses covering topics such as Algebra, Real and Complex Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Calculus, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, Group Theory, Ring Theory, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, etc. Additionally, the department provides some Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs) like Statistics with R, IT Skills & Data Analysis, and Network Flows. The primary objective of these courses is to develop skills necessary for understanding, analysing, interpreting and representing data using R and other relevant IT tools. Value Added Courses (VACs) like Vedic Mathematics facilitate efficient problem-solving of algebraic systems and instil a profound appreciation for the mathematical contributions of ancient India in students, allowing them to execute mathematical calculations swiftly and accurately. The department also offers Generic Electives (GEs) and Discipline Specific Electives (DSEs) like Calculus, Theory of Equations, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Mathematical Python, Mathematical Data Science, Mathematical Finance, Biomathematics, etc. that students of other disciplines can pursue to obtain a minor degree in Mathematics.
Career Progression/Scope
In addition to pursuing research or teaching, Mathematics graduates can explore career opportunities in Accountancy, Finance, Banking, Insurance, Actuarial Science, Earth Sciences, Bio-Mathematical Sciences, Information Theory, Cryptography, Network Security, and interdisciplinary areas of Computer Science, Operational Research and Statistics. Students who graduated from the Department have, in the past, pursued a variety of careers, and excelled in their chosen fields including teaching and research, management, law and the civil services. Every year, a reasonable number opt to pursue higher studies in pure or applied mathematics in institutions such as TIFR, IISc, CMI, Oxford, Cambridge and the London School of Economics. Another popular option is postgraduate studies in Economics, which is extremely mathematical. Finance, Risk Management, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Statistics, MCA are other postgraduate options leading to decent career opportunities. In the recent past, toppers of competitive examinations such as CAT and Joint Admission Test (JAM) for M.Sc. in IITs have been students of Mathematics (Hons) from our college.
