St. Stephen's College is a religious foundation drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It aims at helping its members realise spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values.

Founded on 1 February 1881, St. Stephen's is the oldest college in Delhi. It was first affliated to Calcutta University, and later to Punjab University. Finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, it became one of its three original constituent colleges.

Established in 1974 and redesignated as the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences in 2016, the Department has played a vital role in sustaining the College’s longstanding tradition of athletic achievement, intellectual engagement, and character development.

As a constituent college of the University of Delhi, the Department combines academic rigour with a vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic sporting culture. Supported by a dedicated faculty actively engaged in research, academic conferences, and interdisciplinary collaborations, the Department provides students with exposure to contemporary perspectives in sports science, physical education, fitness, wellness, and human performance.

Teaching and Learning

In accordance with the curricular framework of UGCF-2022, the Department offers a range of interdisciplinary courses that are open to undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds. These courses integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application, critical inquiry, and experiential learning in the areas of sport, fitness, wellness, and lifestyle management.

Sport occupies a central place in the intellectual, cultural, and social life of the College. The Department organizes several flagship events, including the Invitational Basketball and Football Tournaments, Friendship Cricket Series, K. M. Mathew Memorial Sports Debate, and the Annual Sports Bash.

The Department currently supports seventeen varsity sports programmes, comprising eleven men’s teams and six women’s teams, in addition to a wide range of recreational and intramural sporting activities.

College teams actively participate in inter-collegiate competitions organized by the University of Delhi, as well as national-level tournaments conducted by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Through these engagements, the Department continues to uphold the College’s longstanding commitment to sporting excellence, competitive spirit, teamwork, and holistic student development.

Career Progression and Legacy

Sport has long been an integral part of the identity and heritage of St. Stephen’s College. Over the decades, its students and alumni have represented India at the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships. Their accomplishments have been recognised through prestigious national honours, including the Padma Shri, Arjuna Award, and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

The College’s inclusive sporting culture enables students from diverse academic backgrounds to participate alongside national and international athletes.
