St. Stephen's College is a religious foundation drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It aims at helping its members realise spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values.

Founded on 1 February 1881, St. Stephen's is the oldest college in Delhi. It was first affliated to Calcutta University, and later to Punjab University. Finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, it became one of its three original constituent colleges.

Overview 

The Hindi department was associated with the Sanskrit department in very early days but was established as a separate department in 2010. The Department of Hindi is committed to promoting excellence in the study of Hindi language, literature, and culture. With a blend of classical and contemporary texts, the department offers students a deep understanding of India’s literary heritage, linguistic traditions, and evolving sociocultural landscape.

Teaching and Learning

The Hindi department is dedicated to giving strength to the values, feelings, logic and creativity among students. A sensible understanding of nature, critical analysis of human complexities, and real assessment of development patterns and their impact on humanity are a few areas of literary criticism. Philosophy of life is taught in the Hindi department through interesting stories and enlightening poems. Through Women writings, Dalit writings, Tribal writings, and contemporary writings, the Hindi department always tries to synchronize with the changing dynamics of society and the burning questions of the day. The department’s goal is to prepare students for the upcoming challenges and give them a sense of responsibility towards humanity. Lectures followed by tutorials enhance students’ understanding. Classroom teaching depends on discussions, debates and participatory activities like hands-on practice.

Course Structure

Our curriculum includes poetry, prose, literary criticism, language studies, creative writing, and emerging areas such as media, translation, and digital communication. Teaching is enriched through lectures, tutorials, discussions, and student centered activities that encourage critical thinking and creative expression. The Hindi department offers a variety of courses such as – ‘Generic Elective Courses’, ‘Skill Enhancement Courses’, ‘Ability Enhancement Courses’ and ‘Value Added Courses’. Papers offered by Hindi departments, such as creative writing, script writing, and dialogue writing, focus on the originality of thought and the essence of emotions. ‘Hindi Sahitya ka Itihaas’. ‘Hindi Kavita’, ‘Sahitya Chintan’, ‘Bhartiya Gyan Parampara’, ‘Sahitya Sanskriti aur Cinema’, ‘Hindi Bhasha Aur Lipi Ka Itihas’, ‘Bhakti Parampara Aur Manav Moolya’ are some other papers offered by Hindi department which provide the students with the real taste of Hindi literature and social behaviour.
