An engaging and multidisciplinary department fostering computational thinking, programming skills, problem-solving, innovation, and practical learning for academic and professional excellence.
Overview
The Department of Computer Science at St. Stephen’s College is committed to academic excellence, fostering a deep understanding of computational principles and critical thinking amongst its junior members. Dedicated to interdisciplinary learning, our Faculty members strive to create an engaging and inclusive environment for our junior members to develop technical skills, and leadership qualities, thereby equipping them to excel in research, academia, industry, and management roles.
Under the UGCF-2022, the department primarily caters to junior members enrolled in the multidisciplinary course namely- B.Sc. (Programme) with Computer Science. The multidisciplinary nature of the curriculum provides junior members with a strong foundation in computing while integrating knowledge from diverse fields of study such as Mathematics and Physics.
Teaching & Learning
The Department houses a spacious and well-equipped Computer Science Lab, designed to provide students with a hands-on learning experience in various computing domains. The lab features high-performance computers equipped with the latest hardware and software required for coursework, programming, and research. The lab provides an immersive environment where students can develop real-world applications, collaborate on live projects and participate in hackathons.
The Faculty members of the department are dedicated to nurturing intellectual curiosity and technical expertise among junior members. They guide students in applying theoretical concepts to practical scenarios, bridging the gap between academia and industry requirements. Beyond academics, the department actively organizes workshops, guest lectures, and technical seminars, bringing insights from industry leaders and researchers to junior members. The Computer Science Department actively promotes experiential learning through various initiatives organized by the computer science society.
Course Structure
The curriculum is designed to develop core competencies in problem-solving, algorithmic thinking, and software development. The compulsory courses (i.e. Discipline Specific Core (DSC) papers) include- Programming Fundamentals using C++, Data Structures (using C++), Computer System Architecture, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems, Computer Networks, Design & Analysis of Algorithms and Information Security. Beyond core courses, junior members also have the opportunity to explore specialized areas that align with their career aspirations through Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) courses. DSE papers include- Python Programming for data handling, Data Exploration & Visualization, Data Mining & Knowledge Discovery and Research Methodology. Additionally, junior members are also presented with options to study Generic Elective (GE) papers, Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs), Value Added Courses (VACs) at appropriate stages in their degree programme. The fourth year of the programme provides an option for an academic project/ writting dissertation/ entrepreneurship.
The wide range of Generic Elective (GE) courses provided for junior members (who do not have Computer Science as one of their core disciplines) includeProgramming with Python, Data Analysis and Visualization, Java Programming, Web Programming, and Artificial Intelligence, among others. These papers facilitate knowledge integration across disciplines, providing exposure to industry relevant technologies and broadening career prospects. Students enrolled in multidisciplinary courses can obtain a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in a core discipline (major degree), which includes DSC papers, DSE papers, and a dissertation in the chosen discipline. A minor degree can also be pursued by completing required DSC papers and DSE paper within the fouryear program.
Career Progression & Scope
Upon completing the multidisciplinary course of B.Sc. (Programme) with Computer Science, many of our junior members pursue postgraduate studies such as M.Sc., M.C.A., and M.B.A. at prestigious institutions in India and abroad. Our junior members have successfully qualified for competitive examinations, including JAM and CAT, securing admissions in leading institutes such as IITs, IIMs, and FMS. A significant proportion of the graduating classes has been highly sought after by multinational corporations such as ABS New Zealand Bank, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Deloitte and Sprinklr. A very large number of former junior members is also holding positions in reputed Indian enterprises such as Meesho, Talentel and Praxis Global Alliance. Finally, it is heartening to mention that many of our alumni are being placed as Faculty members in many reputed institutions in India and abroad and have occupied prominent positions in the public sectors as well.
