St. Stephen's College is a religious foundation drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It aims at helping its members realise spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values.

Founded on 1 February 1881, St. Stephen's is the oldest college in Delhi. It was first affliated to Calcutta University, and later to Punjab University. Finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, it became one of its three original constituent colleges.

St. Stephen’s College is committed to provide a suitable enabling environment to all students with special needs and those from deprived backgrounds. Equal Opportunity Cell of the college is mandated to take necessary steps in this direction.

A significant number of the students here hail from the SC/ST background or are persons with disabilities. They are entitled to services provided by the Equal Opportunity Cell and Enabling Unit.

The ground floor of college main building and its rest rooms are wheel chair accessible, and it is ensured that all classes of orthopedically challenged students are held in accessible areas.

The student volunteers of The Social Service League provide regular reading services and scribes (during examinations and to write assignments and projects) to visually challenged students.

The College library in addition to the Braille books has specialized equipments like Jaws-enabled computers, Zoom-Ex, and a large collection of e-books for visually challenged students. These students can also issue out MP3 and Angel recording devices.

These facilities are constantly updated and upgraded as the college attaches special significance to the participation of the visually challenged in its total life.

Academic Support

Reading assistance, scribes and academic support are provided through dedicated student volunteers.

Assistive Technology

JAWS-enabled computers, Zoom-Ex scanners, Braille books, MP3 devices and Angel recording devices are available.

The College encourages equal participation of all students in academic, cultural and campus life.

The Enabling Unit

The Enabling Unit started functioning in the college from the academic year 2015-2016. It is a platform for the differently abled students of the college to overcome their limitations and showcase their talents and organising skills.

There is a team of dedicated volunteers who work efficiently for the smooth functioning of the unit. There is an Enabling Unit room in the college that also houses scanners and recording devices for the visually challenged students.

The Enabling Unit is an active body that organises several talks, seminars and group discussions throughout the year.

Its annual event UTAKARSHA allows differently abled students to showcase their talents.
