St. Stephen's College is a religious foundation drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It aims at helping its members realise spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values.

Founded on 1 February 1881, St. Stephen's is the oldest college in Delhi. It was first affliated to Calcutta University, and later to Punjab University. Finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, it became one of its three original constituent colleges.

Biography

Dr. Rohit Mathew is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy, with his doctoral research focusing on the concept of the “Knowledge of Essence.” He is a dedicated educator and researcher committed to fostering intellectual curiosity, clarity of thought, and independent inquiry among students. His pedagogical approach combines rigorous academic instruction with an emphasis on student-led inquiry, critical reflection, and meaningful classroom dialogue.

As a scholar, Dr. Mathew is actively expanding the research undertaken during his M.Phil. and Ph.D. into independent publications, while pursuing new areas of inquiry that respond to contemporary philosophical debates and evolving curricular needs. He aims to contribute to an intellectually vibrant, interdisciplinary, and student-centred academic environment through mentorship, collaborative teaching, and a sustained commitment to academic excellence in both teaching and research.
