St. Stephen's College is a religious foundation drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It aims at helping its members realise spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values.

Founded on 1 February 1881, St. Stephen's is the oldest college in Delhi. It was first affliated to Calcutta University, and later to Punjab University. Finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, it became one of its three original constituent colleges.

Biography

Lt. Dr. Rakhi Thareja is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and an Associate NCC Officer at St. Stephen’s College, with more than 15 years of teaching experience. She is actively involved in community service through NCC and has received several national recognitions for her contributions to society, including the DG Medallion for guiding the women contingent on Kartavya Path during the Republic Day Parade, 2023, and the prestigious DG Commendation in 2025 for her outstanding service to the nation through NCC. She has also contributed to the revision and printing of the précis for the NCC B and C Certificate examinations, impacting nearly 20 lakh cadets across the country. Through Project Udaan, an initiative of CBSE, she has delivered lectures to girls from underprivileged backgrounds across India, inspiring students through science education and mentorship.

Research Interests
Dr. Thareja obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Delhi, specializing in Quantum Dots and Computational Chemistry. Her research interests include computational chemistry, molecular modelling, quantum dots, and environmental issues. She has published 12 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and authored six book chapters, in addition to contributing to a funded innovation research project at the University of Delhi. She has also delivered numerous invited lectures and talks, sharing her expertise with students and professionals. Her recent research achievement includes the publication of a patent in May 2024 titled “Advanced Chemical Recycling Process for Plastic Waste Conversion into High-Quality Polymers.” She is a member of professional societies including NCC and ISAS and continues to pursue research in the field of Chemistry.
