St. Stephen's College is a religious foundation drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It aims at helping its members realise spiritual and moral as well as intellectual and aesthetic values.

Founded on 1 February 1881, St. Stephen's is the oldest college in Delhi. It was first affliated to Calcutta University, and later to Punjab University. Finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, it became one of its three original constituent colleges.

Biography

Dr. Malay Neerav is  Head of the Department of History and Dean of Academics at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, he has an interdisciplinary academic background encompassing History, Sociology, and Psychology. He specialised in the History of Ancient India at the postgraduate level and has pursued research on social and historical questions relating to ancient Indian society. His pioneering work on the proliferation and segregation of untouchable castes in North India between A.D. 600 and 1200 has been an important contribution to the study of social history. He has published research papers in reputed journals and has been invited to deliver lectures at several leading universities abroad, including the University of Cambridge, University of London, and University of Wisconsin. He has also contributed to academic programmes through lectures on study skills for the distance-learning undergraduate programme of the London School of Economics and Political Science.

In addition to his academic and research career, Dr. Neerav has distinguished himself as a broadcaster, sports journalist, and media analyst, with particular expertise in health, environmental issues, and sports. He has served as a consultant editor for the BBC World Service and as a senior analyst for prominent media organisations, including Prasar Bharati, Zee Media, and Network18. He has covered major international sporting events, including the Olympics, and has produced documentaries and radio features for the BBC. His work on health and environmental issues in India received wide acclaim, while his radio feature on Indian population was selected as the Best Radio Programme by the World Population Council. At the University of Delhi, he has also held significant academic and administrative responsibilities, including serving as Joint Dean of Students’ Welfare and Media Coordinator, and as the University’s official spokesperson. As Dean of Academics and Head of the Department of History at St. Stephen’s College, he continues to contribute to academic planning, curriculum development, and the broader intellectual and educational life of the College.
