MALAYALAM LITERARY SOCIETY

Hailing from different corners of the nation, Stephanians have always been enthusiastic about exploring new cultures. The Malayalam Literary Society or MLS is among the most vibrant cultural societies of St. Stephen’s College. The primary vision of this society is to portray the much-celebrated culture of Kerala to our diverse student community. MLS takes one on a journey through the delicacies, culture, religions, politics, geography, and festivals of Kerala. From literary research to the most exciting festivities, our society is an entire package.

The events organized by MLS are the most awaited ones in our college. We celebrate Onam to its fullest extent, and the delicacies, games, and art forms draw the attention of people from diverse backgrounds. On 1 November 2021, we achieved the landmark of hosting the first offline event in college post the second wave of Covid-19 when we successfully organised a Kerala Piravi. The event prompted other societies to conduct offline events too! The Annual Fest of MLS, Kaliyattam, held in February, is a sheer treat to the senses.

MLS is an apt space for anyone who wants to touch and feel Kerala in all its beauty. An inclusive space for all, we are a diverse family that strives to inculcate a sense of unity in the hearts of students. More than a society, MLS is a family, a family where we prefer unity over designations, fun over competition, and selflessness over selfishness. We learn together, have fun together, and we grow together.

Onam Celebration

Onam was celebrated with much gusto in St. Stephen’s college after a long gap of three years on 10 September 2022. The junior members of the college dressed up in the traditional clothes of Kerala. The foyer and the mess lawns were decorated with beautiful flowers.

The event started at 1:30 p. m. with the president of the Malayalam Literary Society, Archana Thomas welcoming everyone to the event. The principal, Prof. John Varghese extended his warm greetings and revealed the banner for Onam 2022. This was followed by cultural activities like onam songs, thiruvathira, and vanchipattu. The senior members of the college were invited to speak to us about onam, which was then followed by the vote of thanks.

The onam sadhya started at 2.30 p.m. in the mess. 290 students had registered for the onam sadhya. The volunteers ensured that it was conducted in an efficient manner. After the lunch volunteers also helped clean up.

Lunch was followed by Chendamelam. Students were dancing to the beats of the drums. After the chendamelam, a game session was organised. Musical chairs and tug of war were conducted with much enthusiasm. Teams of eight had signed up for tug of war making the event a success.

After a whole day of celebrations, Onam 2022 was declared over.
