ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been transforming our lives for decades, but never has AI felt more ubiquitous than now. It seems as though not a week passes without yet another AI system overcoming an unprecedented hurdle or outperforming humans at their own game.

From SIRI to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (AI) is progressing rapidly. While science fiction often portrays AI as robots with human-like characteristics, AI can encompass anything from Google’s search algorithms to IBM’s Watson to autonomous weapons.

We are not very far away from creating machines that can think and take decisions for themselves. It is not a question of if, but when?

Academic Conclave 2017, St. Stephen’s College presents a series of talks and workshops revolving around this burning topic which has caught the imagination of many generations, like wildfire. The ultimate dream, to create a human-like creature, to become God.

Plenary Talk:

We present to you, a talk on ‘Artificial Intelligence & the Future of Work, Health and Entertainment’ by Dr. Gautam Shroff, Vice President and Chief Scientist at Tata Consultancy Services and head of TCS’ Innovation Lab in Delhi. He has published over 30 research papers in the areas of computational mathematics, parallel computing and was awarded with the ‘Young Scientist Award’ by the Department of Atomic Energy (Govt. Of India).

Lectures:

  1. A talk on Algorithms for Intelligent Devices by Prof. Manik Varma who is a researcher at Microsoft Research India and an adjunct professor of Computer Science at IIT Delhi whose research interests lie in the areas of Machine Learning, Computational Advertising and Computer Vision. He is an alumnus.
  2. A talk on Computer Vision by Dr. Lovekesh Vig, an alumnus of our college who leads the Deep Learning team at TCS Research where he works on applying deep models to problems in Computer Vision, NLP, Sensor Analytics and Cognitive Planning.

For better or worse, the AI revolution is coming and is likely to have huge social, political, and economic implications, probably sooner than most people realize. How we handle the emergence of powerful new AI based technologies will have implications for generations to come, and may even have a bearing on our survival as a species. What are the reasons behind the rapid surge in AI capabilities over the past decade, particularly due to the emergence of deep neural networks? What are the major obstacles in the path to replicating human intelligence? There are also dangers of allowing unregulated AI to penetrate sensitive domains like defense and to the potential benefits that would accrue by harnessing its power for domains like healthcare, safety and energy management.

Workshops:

On “Application of Neutral Network using Python” by Mr. Abranil, Senior Consultant, DexLab Analytics and Mr. Vivek Debuka, Principal Founder, DexLab Analytics. Machine Learning is the science of getting computers to act without being explicitly programmed. In the past decade, machine learning has given us self-driving cars, practical speech recognition, effective web search, and a vastly improved understanding of the human genome. Machine learning is so pervasive today that you probably use it dozens of times a day without knowing it. Many researchers also think it is the best way to make progress towards human-level AI. Data Science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured.

SOCIETIES
The self-motivated and ceaseless activities of over two dozen clubs and societies constitute a very important part of College life and offer a large variety of avenues for self expression. For each subject there is a Society that sponsors extra-curricular lectures and discussion and, in general, tries to stimulate interest in the subject. There are many other academic and cultural society and clubs covering wide range of activities, such as debating, dramatics, mountaineering, film and music appreciation, social service, photography and electronics.
