Hala Saheb
- a Tribute
Arvind Malhotra, B.A.(Hons.) Mathematics (1977-80)
Hala Saheb was one of those who understood innately as to how institutions
like St. Stephen's College are built. The role of sports and outdoor
activities in balancing the academic inputs is what Hala Saheb personified
by his own example. A keen hockey player and lover of sports, Hala
Saheb carried his sportsman spirit and temperament in his long association
with the college.
A whole generation of Stephanians would remember Hala Saheb from different
perspectives - as History teacher, tutor, staff representative, Dean,
Vice-Principal, Principal, and of course, as an elder friend of the
Stephanians' family. I say family, because Hala Saheb, in a significant
sense, combined in himself the qualities of loyalty and dedication
to the college, which constitute the guiding spirit of the Stephanians.
I speak today also as an ex-Stephanian. Without doubt, Hala Saheb,
as a Principal, Dean and teacher, unhesitatingly acknowledged the role of old students in further strengthening and building this great
institution. He gave to us, a sense of belonging and continued association
with the college.
He motivated us to contribute time and effort to the betterment of
our institution. He helped us to interact with the old students and
provided us a crucial bridge for an interaction with the present Stephanians.
A storehouse of information, Dr. Hala, as many of us would remember
today, became the conduit through which various generations of Stephanians remained in contact and touch with each other.
In his death, we have lost a friend and guide. A befitting tribute
to him would be to continue the relationship of old students with the college along the path he led. <<
