Onam Celebrations
Onam, well known as the
festival of harvest in Kerala was celebrated in St. Stephen’s
college on the 30th of
August 2010. The day commenced with the Senior Members and Junior
Member of the college dressing up in the traditional Keralite
costumes i.e., women in white sarees with golden Kasavu border and
men in ‘Mundu’. There was a beautiful floral carpet called
“Pookalam” in the main portico, enhancing the beauty of the college
wherein the Lighting-of –the Lamp ceremony took place. There was a
‘Thiruvathira’ performance at the mess lawns in the afternoon.
‘Thiruvathira’ is the traditional dance of Kerala played around the
lamp which symbolises purity. This was followed by the Onam lunch
called ‘Sadya’ in the mess hall. Sadya is a pure vegetarian lunch
accompanied by sweet dishes called ‘payasam’. The day ended by the
screening of the Malayalam movie ‘Pazhashiraja’ in the college hall.
‘Pazhashiraja’ is a historical film based on the ruler of Kerala,
King Pazhassi, who fought against the British.
