Vacancy for an Archivist
Job Description
St Stephen’s College invites applications from qualified and competent professionals for the position of College Archivist. The College Archivist will be a key member of the College, reporting to the Principal, responsible for managing and safeguarding the historical records, documents, and artefacts that chronicle the rich and diverse history of St Stephen’s College, predating India’s independence. This position requires a meticulous and detail-oriented professional with a passion for preserving and promoting the institution’s legacy. Sufficient freedom to exercise one’s knowledge and creativity and in consultation and with the permission of the Principal will be an occupational privilege. Further details as given below:
Key Responsibilities
1. Collection Management:
- Curate, organise, and manage the college’s archival collections, including documents, photographs, audio-visual materials, and artefacts.
- Implement and enforce best practices for the preservation, cataloguing, and storage of archival materials.
- Develop and maintain an efficient and accessible archival system.
2. Digitisation and Access:
- Oversee the digitisation of archival materials to enhance accessibility by researchers and ensure the long- term preservation of valuable resources.
- Collaborate with IT and other departments to develop and maintain an online archival database for easy access by researchers, students, and staff.
3. Reference Services:
- Provide reference assistance to researchers, students, faculty, staff and authors authorised by the Principal and seeking access to archival materials.
- Collaborate with institutions outside and academic departments within the College to support research initiatives and projects that utilise archival resources.
4. Outreach and Education:
- Develop and implement outreach programs to promote awareness and utilisation of the college’s archival resources in consultation with the Principal.
- Conduct workshops, presentations, and tours to educate the college community, educational institutions and the public about the historical significance of archival materials.
5. Preservation and Conservation:
- Collaborate with conservation professionals to ensure the proper care and preservation of delicate or deteriorating materials.
- Implement conservation measures to extend the lifespan of archival items.
6. Acquisition and Appraisal:
- Evaluate and acquire new materials for the archival collection in accordance with established acquisition policies.
- Work with donors and stakeholders to secure donations and acquisitions that align with the college’s historical significance.
Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
- Proven experience of at least 5 years in archival management, with a focus on higher education institutions or similar organisations.
- Strong knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices.
- Familiarity with digitisation techniques and technologies.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to preserving and promoting the historical legacy of the College.
Remuneration
Salary and remuneration will be commensurate with knowledge and proven experience. The position offers an opportunity to exercise one’s knowledge and creative abilities to develop and promote the Archives, and by extension research, within the larger framework of the College and its working.
