INTRODUCTION
The Enabling Unit of St. Stephen's College, established under the University Grants Commission (UGC) mandate, is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and equitable academic environment. It works to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to participate in every aspect of college life by removing structural, administrative, and social barriers to education.
The Unit functions as a central body that coordinates accessibility support, facilitates volunteer assistance, and oversees measures to make the college infrastructure and academic systems more inclusive. It ensures that institutional mechanisms remain responsive to the needs of students and aligned with the principles of inclusive education and equal opportunity.
In addition to providing practical support, the Enabling Unit actively promotes awareness and sensitivity regarding accessibility and inclusion across the college community. Through advocacy, collaboration, and engagement, it seeks to strengthen a culture of empathy, respect, and shared responsibility.
Through its continuous efforts, the Enabling Unit reaffirms St. Stephen's College's commitment to creating a barrier-free educational space grounded in dignity, equality, and collective progress.
The Enabling Unit was formally established under the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Delhi University’s inclusivity mandate. Since its inception, it has strived to ensure that students with disabilities are not left behind but are instead given every possible academic, infrastructural, and social support to thrive.

One of the foremost responsibilities of the Enabling Unit is to ensure academic accessibility. This includes:
● Preparing and converting study material into accessible formats such as audio, Braille, and e-text.
● Introducing assistive devices and new technologies to make learning smoother and independent.
● Providing scribe support during examinations for visually impaired and mobility-impaired students.
● Continuously updating resources in line with modern accessibility standards to ensure parity with peers.

Accessibility goes beyond classrooms. The Enabling Unit works in constant coordination with the estate office and college infrastructure committee to remove physical barriers across campus. Without harming the heritage value of our college, we:
● Implement tactile paths, ramps, lifts, hand railings, and PWD-friendly washrooms.
● Innovate solutions for heritage-sensitive spaces so inclusivity does not come at the cost of legacy.
● Conduct continuous audits of the campus infrastructure, preparing reports and recommending upgrades.

To ensure holistic support, the Enabling Unit runs a PWD Helpdesk. Here, each student with disability is assigned a council member, who acts as a mentor and first point of contact. This ensures:
● Academic, personal, or accessibility-related concerns are addressed promptly.
● Students feel comfortable participating in all college activities without hesitation.
● Peer and faculty support is always available, ensuring an inclusive community.

The Enabling Unit believes in celebrating ability and diversity. Our flagship initiatives include:
• Freshers : The Enabling Unit organizes an annual Freshers’ Party to warmly welcome first-year students into the college community. Designed as an inclusive celebration, the event brings together both students with disabilities and non-disabled students to foster interaction, understanding, and friendship. It features fun games, performances, and talent showcases such as singing and dancing, offering students an opportunity to express themselves and connect with peers. Through this initiative, the Enabling Unit aims to create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere that bridges gaps, celebrates diversity, and strengthens the sense of belonging within St. Stephen’s College.

● Sign Language Workshop: The Enabling Unit conducts an annual Sign Language Workshop on Sign Language Day (23rd September) in collaboration with the Indian Sign Language Association. The workshop aims to spread awareness about the importance of sign language and promote inclusive communication. It is an engaging and informative session where participants learn the basics of sign language through interactive activities. The event reflects the Enabling Unit’s commitment to fostering accessibility, awareness, and a more inclusive campus environment.

● Library Workshop: The Enabling Unit collaborates with the College Library to promote awareness about accessible learning tools for visually impaired students and others facing challenges in accessing reading materials. During these sessions, students are introduced to various tactile resources such as Br aille books and tactile maps, along with demonstrations of accessible technologies. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility, encourage inclusive learning practices, and ensure equal access to educational resources for all.

● Movie screening: The Enabling Unit also organizes regular movie screenings as part of its effort to promote motivation, awareness, and community-building within the college. These screenings are intra-college events, open to all students, and are curated to highlight themes of resilience, determination, inclusivity, and personal growth.
We have screened impactful films such as Shikrant and Hichki, both of which portray powerful stories of individuals overcoming challenges and breaking stereotypes.
Through these screenings, the Enabling Unit aims to inspire students, encourage dialogue on disability and perseverance, and create a shared space where everyone irrespective of background can reflect, engage, and learn together.

● Talk sessions: The Enabling Unit also organizes Talk Sessions, where we invite speakers who have overcome significant challenges in their personal or professional lives. These sessions serve as powerful platforms for students to hear real stories of resilience, struggle, and achievement directly from individuals who have turned adversity into strength.
We’ve invited speakers like Satender Singh, Ms. Ayushi etc. Our aim is to motivate and inspire students by giving them access to voices that are honest, relatable, and deeply empowering.
Through these interactive conversations, students gain new perspectives, build confidence, and learn that challenges whether physical, social, or emotional can be faced and conquered with courage, support, and determination.

Dristikon is one of the flagship events of the Enabling Unit, St. Stephen’s College. It’s an inclusive two-day cultural festival designed by and for students with disabilities, with active participation from institutions across Delhi.
The event reflects the core ideology of the Enabling Unit: breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and building a campus where every student feels seen, heard, and empowered.
Students from multiple colleges come together to showcase their talents through a wide range of activities and performances. Dristikon is organized in collaboration with various societies of St. Stephen’s College such as the Hiking Club, Quiz Club, Sabha, and many more, ensuring that inclusivity is embedded not only in participation but also in planning and execution.
The festival features:
• One-Man Shows that highlight personal stories, perspectives, and creativity.
• Drama and Singing Competitions celebrating expression beyond limitations.
• Story weaving and General quiz to bring out their knowledge and creativity.
• Typing Competitions testing their cognition and speed.
Collaborative engagements with partner institutions, including the Blind Relief Association (BRA), strengthens our commitment to accessibility and community partnerships.
Across the two days, Dristikon becomes a space where students with disabilities are not just participants—they are leaders, artists, thinkers, and performers. The event stands as a powerful reminder that inclusivity is not a concept on paper; it is something we practice, encourage, and celebrate.
Dristikon continues to uphold the Enabling Unit’s mission: to create an environment where talent is recognized, diversity is celebrated, and every student regardless of disability gets the platform they deserve.
Junoon is a two-day inclusive sports festival organized by the Enabling Unit in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences of St. Stephen’s College. Created for PwD (Persons with Disabilities) students, the event embodies the true essence of accessibility, empowerment, and equal opportunity. The event is conducted with dedicated support from the NCC and collaboration with other societies including Hiking Club, College Chess Team who help in escorting participants and ensuring smooth coordination and safety throughout the festival.
Over the course of two days, students participate in a wide range of sports and competitive activities such as arm wrestling, cricket, 50m and 100m races, chess, tug of war, and even quiz competitions—each designed to highlight skill, determination, and sportsmanship rather than limitations.
To provide a comfortable and engaging experience, refreshments and food are offered on both days, creating a warm and encouraging atmosphere for every participant. Junoon has become one of the most vibrant and meaningful initiatives of the Enabling Unit, giving PwD students a platform to showcase their talents, build confidence, and enjoy the spirit of sports in a fully inclusive environment.
It stands as a reminder that enthusiasm, courage, and passion are not defined by one’s physical challenges, and that true inclusivity is achieved when every student gets the chance to participate, compete, and celebrate without barriers.
