The trend towards specialization and exclusiveness is gaining in importance with each passing day. The Stephanian is indeed our college magazine, but is not the only journal published here. Exclusive journals of the various societies in college and other independent journals are increasingly finding their way in the readers' hands. While some of the publications are still in their infancy, a few others like the Kooler Talk have been in circulation since quite some time.
Gandhi Study Circle's annual magazine, Sanmiti was started in 1995-96. Over the past five years it has grown and changed. Sanmati was launched with the objective to "serve as a forum for the expression of different opinions and ideas about Mahatma Gandhi, his principles, his life, his relevance and all that we need to know for the perpetuation of Gandhian ideals." Initially, the magazine had both English and Hindi sections, but for practical reasons it was decided to publish the latest issue in English alone. Over the years the magazine included articles and essays on Gandhian issues. Today, the magazine encourages its contributers to write on any issue they feel deeply about, whether or not it is explicitly Gandhian. Surveys in the college on the questions such as 'Would Gandhiji have supported the entry of multinationals' have also been incorporated in the magazine. In this way, Sanmati has tried to get the students interested in exploring the ideals of Gandhiji. It has changed and adapted itself to be a forum for expression of the opinions and ideas in the new millennium. This was not a very difficult task as Gandhian ideals lend themselves to easy adaptation without being diluted.
The Hiking Club's magazine, Miscellary, is published 'whenever the club can gather enough funds for it,' as an executive of the Hiking Club Council confessed. It contains the activities undertaken by the society in the recent past as well as articles that generate awareness and interest in adventure sports and activities.
The Music Society publication, Play On has steadily grown in stature since its inception a few years ago and it now covers issues related to both Indian as well as Western music. Mindful of aspects of popular as well as classical traditions of the two it has striven to inform, enlighten and entertain; attempting on a harmonious blending of articles on various facets of music. Also included are accounts of the society's activities, album reviews, crosswords, quizzes, interviews and other material. Of late, the society has also started a one-page brochure called MAG, which is published on a regular basis.
Kooler Talk is the saucy and witty satirical rag of the college. The self-professed 'Aunt Katy' indulges in the art of creative downsizing of the college's many luminaries, events and institutions. Its 'no-holds-barred' iconoclasm not only makes it wildly funny but also a favourite amongst students. Most importantly, it is perhaps the only forum, which allows Stephanians to air their dissent- and get away with it. Its efforts to capture the madness and mayhem of the college have earned Kooler Talk a distinctive identity of its own: one, which it would be the first to take a dig at.
One thing no graduate wants to leave without is the Yearbook.St.Stephen's, for long has carried the tradition of publishing the Yearbook with write-ups for the third year students, snaps of college, articles and a whole lot of other 'college stuff'. The Yearbook (1999-2000), appropriately called the Yearbook Y2K, carries all the usual material plus articles from old Stephanians. There is also a CD-ROM to supplement the Yearbook, with many video-clippings of the college. To all the 'senti' third years, the Yearbook is much more than just a few sheets of paper. It is memories, emotions, experience- all rolled into one.
The Debating Society produced in 1998, a book titled On That Point. It is a well-compiled book, which incorporates various topics: from different motions of debating to different styles of debating. This book can be of great help to the aspirants seeking membership of the society.
Naturally Yours is the mouthpiece of the Wild Life Society and an additional weapon to fight for environment. The magazine encompasses articles concerning various aspects of our environment,
list of wild life sanctuaries, sketches and the like. Some of the write-ups are by eminent persons in this field. To give the magazine a wider appeal, it has been decided to highlight a different theme in each issue. This year's issue has its focus on the endangered Himalayan antelope or 'chinus.' In this way Naturally Yours has been trying to spread environmental awareness among the youth.
The publication of such journals has meant not only the broadening of horizons for the creative talents of Stephanians, but also a flow of more detailed and organized information about the activities of the respective societies; a blending of this information with the growth of literary culture. Independent publications such as the Yearbook and Kooler Talk also are effective ingredients in enhancing the flavour of the literary traditions in College. Here's hoping that the future will bring us the pleasure of much more varied and interesting reading in the college.
