On 29 July 2011, 5 pm, the newly renovated and upgraded Science
Block of St
Stephen’s College was
inaugurated at a well-attended program. The Chief Guest for the
function was Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, eminent alumnus and
former Governor of
West Bengal. Shri Gandhi
spoke about the challenges that confront science today’s
precarious world. He observed that the role of the Stephenian
scholar of science within such as world was to ‘make a
difference’. Such an orientation would be truly distinguishing.
The infrastructural changes were made possible with a 2.5 crore
grant from the
Delhi University. So far,
the grant has gone toward modularizing and upgrading the two
physics and two chemistry laboratories, classrooms, flooring,
roof renovation and other infrastructural work.
In addition to the infrastructural developments being
undertaken, academic and research developments are in the
offing. The Principal stated that faculty and undergraduate
research projects will be encouraged and housed within the newly
upgraded Science Block or Science Campus. This would help the
Science Block which is reputed to have the best undergraduate
departments in the country (India Today survey), to
maintain the standards that it is reputed for.
The program (below) was attended by large number of students,
faculty and alumni including the President of Alumni
Association, Mr. Ved Marwah.
