The Economics Festival
What goes into organising an Economics Festival for all the colleges in Delhi University, plus a few more? If you’d have asked a member of the Economics Society sometime during November you might not have got a reply for they were too busy trying to get things in order. But the initial brain-storming and planning, collecting of finances, putting up posters and banners and the organization of events, which reached a fevered pitch at the end of November, culminated successfully in the Economics Festival, 2003. It kicked off on the 1st of December with two events, the annual N.C. Ray Memorial Paper Presentation and Mock-Stocks. Of the 12 topics chosen thoughtfully by the participants, the paper presentation on the dabbawalahs of Mumbai caught everyone’s interest right from the word go. Meanwhile, at the other end of College in the SCR, young investors expertly planned their investments as news flashes kept giving them additional information to act upon. On the second day, the quiz was fiercely competed over. Iconoclast, a promising new event, was from the onset fraught with technical problems and had to be finally cancelled. However, the organizers assure us that efforts to explore Economics in new ways won’t end, and we are sure to see similar conceptualizations in the near future. On the third day was the much awaited, the annual N.C. Ray Memorial Debate on the topic, “This House Believes we live in a Multi-Polar World”. A tea following the bloodbath marked the end of the Economics Festival.
