Yearbook Report 2009-2010
The Mathematics Society is amongst the oldest societies in our
college. We are devoted to pursuing activities and events aimed at
fostering interest and creative expression of mathematical ideas
both in college and outside it.

The academic year 2009-10 started with The Mathematics Society
hosting a
Freshers’ Welcome
on 4th August 2009 for the first year
mathematics junior members.

Further, a trip to Mcleod Ganj and Dharamshala was organized
from 13th-16th August 2009. About
60 keen junior members enjoyed this departmental vacation along
with the Mathematics Society’s Staff Advisor Ms. Monika Bansal
and two more teachers, namely Ms. Samridhi Mehta and Mrs. Sakshi
Khanna.

Integration 2009, the annual fest of the society was held
over two days, i.e, 24th-25th September
2009. It was inaugurated by Dr. Anima Nagar, a professor at
I.I.T. Delhi. The fest saw national level participation with
students from colleges like I.I.T. Kanpur and
St. Xavier's college (Mumbai)
coming in. The fest hosted quiz, paper presentation and also a
talk by Royal Sundaram on Actuarial Sciences as a career after
mathematics. Amongst the fun mathematical games were crossword,
sudoku, brainstorm, mathematical pictionary, treasure hunt and
absurd theory. The movie ‘Pi’ was also screened for all
enthusiasts.

The annual journal ‘Mathematica 2009-10’ was also
released during the fest. It included articles written by Prof.
Siddhartha P. Chakrabarty (I.I.T. Guwahati), Prof. Amitabh
Tripathi (I.I.T. Delhi), Prof. C. S. Lalitha (South Campus, D.U.)
and Prof. T.N. Badri (T.A. Pai Management Institute, Manipal).

The
Mathematics Society along with The Electronics Society organized
a talk on ‘The trends in Number Theory’ by Professor Jean Marc
Deshouillers on 11th November 2009, which was
followed by a presentation about ‘Ecole Polytechnique’ and its
admission process, by Prof. Vinay Gupta from the Physics Dept.
of Delhi University.

The Society also organized a
talk on ‘Colouring problems on Integers’ by Prof. Amitabh
Tripat(I.I.T. Delhi) on 5th February 2010,
which saw many keen Junior as well as Senior Members from
Mathematics Dept.

On
9th February 2010, the
‘Challenge Sudoku’ event, organized by The Mathematics Society,
attracted students from various departments of the college to
participate.
