The Informal Discussion Group
St. Stephen’s College
Yearbook
Report (2008-2009)

We
at the IDG believe in catering to all your senses and sensibilities.
The year began with an arousing discussion on sexual politics by
Nivedita Menon. We followed this up by a scrumptious Rajiv Lochan
talk. The society saw a few firsts. An almost bald president, second
year inductions and a walk-a-thon society dinner. Contacts were
lost. Twice.
The
in-formal dress code made Krittika fidget in her NY fineries and
Arjun insist on the eligibility of his track pants quoting a
previous example of the formal shorts.
The
tea with Amar singh seemed to boost more than just his confidence.
Kanti Bajpai too managed to draw a large , mostly dosco crowd. The
historiography of violence was traced by Deepak Mehta and Aseem
Srivastava helped us understand the politics of globalization. Pat
Bourne on secessionism in Northern Ireland was a little rare treat
on the platter.
Votes
were cast, love was defined, scenes were improvised. The society
moved on.
Pradip Kishen’s talk was truly about his work,
life and the electric moon. Mukul Kesavan had interesting things to
say about his books, cricket and the Indian male.
Anand
Patwardhan had a refreshing approach on environmental on a
globalizing world. Prof. Yashpal took us on a mystical journey
across the universe. Gautam Navlakha’s talk on the then upcoming
Kashmir elections definitely provided some great insight.
Rajni
Palriwala gave a rather exquisite talk to a rather exclusive
audience. Romulus Whitaker dispelled myths and phobias through an
intimate rendezvous with the reptiles.Dipankar
Gupta explained the ethics of the big bad corporate world.
Some things however never change. Locks will always have to
be broken, Charts are always going to be displayed and staffroom
always arranged.
Rahul
Bose, Sheila Dixit and M.K. Antony seem to be very hard to source
seasonal delicacies.
However there is still hope for the society, Dodi’s hair is growing
and Ilma has got a phone.
