Dismissal Service 2010
Principal's Report 2010

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT 2010

Presented at the Dismissal Service in College Hall
At 10. 15 am on Monday the 22nd of March, 2010

Shri. Kapil Sibal, Hon’ble Minister for Human Resource Development, Rt. Rev. Sunil Kumar Singh, Chairman of the Governing Body and Supreme Council of St. Stephen’s College, Fr. Ian Weathral, Chairman, Members of the Governing Body and Supreme Council, alumni of the College, distinguished invitees, parents, Senior and Junior Members of the College, Ladies and Gentlemen.
This year’s Dismissal Service is unique for me. Today I bid, albeit in a ceremonial fashion, farewell to the very first batch that I had the privilege to admit to St. Stephen’s College. That was nearly three years ago; in my previous avatar as the first, and hopefully the last, OSD to the College. And you, the graduating Junior Members of 2009-2010, have been a joy and an inspiration to be with. Your eager and innocent faces (at least so they seemed some three summers ago!) from Mondays through Thursdays, attentive as though convinced that the Morning Assembly, customarily despised till life transforms Junior Members into Alumni of vintage, is not such a bad thing, after all, shall remain etched on the tablet of my memory for a very long time to come. You carry with you my heart’s benediction wherever you go. Some of you, hopefully, will stay on for a couple of years more and I congratulate them in advance on their good sense and better taste. Hence the paradox of this Dismissal Service: we grab you back with the right hand even as we wave you good-bye with the other.
We are living in a period of rapid and radical changes. During such a time, we have a special duty to ensure that our cherished foundations are not weakened and our ethos not compromised. “Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold,” diagnosed W. B. Yeats in an apocalyptic prevision of the epidemic of this age. The robustness of an institution is compacted of its subtleties, its courtesies and the magnanimity of the human spirit that puts the shared cause before the clamour of the self. The creed of a consumerist, materialistic age, as Charles Dickens puts it, is that of “looking after no. 1” or, in the words of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, “For my own purpose, all causes shall give way” or, in the pedestrian parlance, “the self before the cause”. The dangers this malignant mentality holds out to the cohesion and character of an institution can hardly be exaggerated. The only antidote to this aberration is self-transcending love for the College, which I believe is the hallmark of a Stephanian. It has been so with generations of Junior Members before you and I trust it will continue to be so with you as well. Having known you over three years now, I have good reasons to believe that you, the graduating batch of 2009-2010 will love your alma mater as she deserves to be.
Now, Reverend Chairman, Hon’ble Chief Guest Shri. Kapil Sibal, Fr. Ian Weathrall, the Vice Chairman of the Governing Body and Supreme Council, I seek your permission to sketch what can only be a perfunctory account of the activities of our College during the current year, being aware that, in doing so, I can do no more than glimpse the scope and sweep of the life of a College as rich as ours has come to be.

1. ADMISSIONS 2009. Admissions comprise the birth pangs of each academic year. The heat of the merciless summer sun is more than matched by the heat of the summer run (I abhor the expression ‘rat race’) for admission. In May-June 2009 we received nearly 24000 applications for 410 seats, which is an all time record. The corresponding figure last year was 12000, marking a 100% increase in applicants. What is even more creditable is that this mammoth task was accomplished without a glitch or grievance. Thanks to the transparency in which this closely-watched process was managed, not a single RTI query was received. The heart-break, though, is that many outstanding applicants, who would have blossomed in College, had to be rejected, given the limited academic space that we have. The cut-offs in Economics, to take just one example, were 97% for commence, 96.5% for Sciences and 96% for humanities. Most of us sitting here who were lucky enough to have been admitted years or decades ago have good reasons to congratulate ourselves for taking the wise decision to be born when we did. Had we waited, we would have missed the bus to St. Stephen’s. Each time the arduous ritual of admissions is completed, one is left aching with the thought that many more young men and women should be enabled to benefit from what St. Stephen’s offers. Even if we were to admit another batch of 50 students to Economics Hons none of them, I dare say, will have to be less than 95% aggregate. I place on record my appreciation for the impeccable work done by the Admissions Committee, led by the Tutor for Admissions, Ms. Nandita Narain.
2. RESULTS OF ANNUAL EXAMINATION 2009. The Annual Report is not an excuse for testing the limits of human endurance. I shall not, hence, overwhelm you with an avalanche of self-adulatory details pertaining to what our Junior Members have achieved. If you take virtually the very best from all over the country, then they are bound to dazzle. So I shall limit myself to mentioning the bare minimum data in this regard. Out of a total number of 367 students who took the annual examination 2009, 215 were placed in the first division. That is nearly 70%. A mention may be made, say, of Economics in which out of the 50 examinees 35 were placed in the first division. Other departments were not economical about their achievements either. 10/24 Eng. Hons students, 4/6 Sanskrit Hons students, 24/53 History Hons. Students, 14/19 Maths. Hons. Students, 25/28 Physics Hons. Students, 20/28 Chemistry Hons students were placed in the first division. The post graduate results, the details of which I refrain from mentioning, maintained a matching level of excellence.

SOCIETIES AND CLUBS: ACTIVITIES DURING 2009-2010

(I) Chemistry Society
Chemistry is a subject that touches all of life. Celebrating this spirit, the “Chemistry Meet ’09” was organized by the Society. The main feature of the Meet was the series of informal interactive sessions of the students and teachers with the eminent scientists of the country. The forum also included paper presentations by students of the various colleges and Universities in Delhi. The selections of these students was done by a two-rounds selection procedure i.e. Intra and Inter college paper-presentation competitions conducted in the month of October, 2009. There was also an ongoing poster presentation competition by the students along with the event and the best entries were rewarded.
The Meet witnessed fabulous “homemade” researches when Dr. Pushpito K. Ghosh, Director, Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar, Gujarat elaborated his research over manufacturing of salt using the basic knowledge of chemical reactions of NaCl and physical aspects like buoyancy etc. titled, “The Joy of Invention”. Prof V. S. Chauhan, Director International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, New Delhi gave a very inspiring talk on “Amazing Properties of Self Organizing Systems based on Small Molecules”. The Closing Ceremony was graced by the magnanimous presence of Prof. Samir Brahmachari, Secretary, DSIR and Director General, CSIR. His talk conveyed concepts on the role of chemistry in the pursuit of advance research in life science and also the scope and challenge to eradicate killer diseases like tuberculosis which will go a long way in the eradication of health hazards faced particularly by many poor people. A big challenge ahead for more scientific innovations!
The annual educational excursion saw an overwhelming participation this year. The students visited the Research and Development Centre of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. In Faridabad where they were shown the various processes involved in the manufacture of petrochemicals and an interestingly eco-friendly park that was fed with treated waste water. The students also enjoyed the informal discussion with Prof. S. Sundar Manoharan from IIT Kanpur, who described his fascinating work on the wonders of Organic L.E.D’s and their applications in the fabrication of ultra thin digital cameras.
The events organized by the Society were significant not only because these were periods of valuable learning for the students and teachers but also because they provided a brilliant forum for the student to interact informally with some of the country’s greatest minds. They also became instrumental in igniting a passion for science amongst young minds.

(II) English Literary Society
The English Literary Society hosted four major talks in the first term which ensured that we had already surpassed last years tally before second term had even begun. The flurry of talks was kick started with a session by Dr. Geeta Patel on “The Poetics of Ismat Chugtai’. We then had the honour of fosting a Poetry Reading in collaboration with the Poetry Society of India which featured noted poets Keki Daruwalla, President of the Poetry Society of India, and Sukrita Paul. Next was a reading and interactive session with poet, translator and novelist Sampurna Chattarji, succeeded by a talk by author Kamla Kapur and artist Payson Stevens on ‘Myth and Storytelling’. The more mundane activites of the Society like Book Club, Poetry Reading, Film Screening and Play Reading were also begun with a burst of enthusiasm.
The annual festival of the English Literary Society, LOGOS, was a highly successful event which included participation from students from several colleges and a multitude of disciplines. The majority of our events like Debate, Elocution, Short Story Writing and Taboo were centred on the theme ’Literature and the Fantastic’ as were the two panel discussions. The first panel, The Many Facets of Fantasy featured Dr. Sambuddha Sen, Dr. Prasanta Chakravarty and Dr. Eric Soreng, all of whom are noted professors of Delhi University. The second panel, The Fantastic-Magnifying Reality, featured graphic novelist, Sarnath Banerjee and Delhi University professor, Dr. Shirshendu Chakrabarti. A new addition this year was a highly successful interview session with fantasy novelist Samit Basu which was well attended by students from all over the university.
The year came to a close with two talks, hosted by the “Lit. Soc” in collaboration with the British Council. Noted biographer, Claire Tomalin delivered a stimulating paper on Jane Austen, while Geoff Dyer treated listeners to an entertaining session on travel writing.

(XVI) Fine Arts Society
The Fine Arts Society has worked actively in the academic year 2009-10. Although the Society faced a financial crisis, it worked towards incorporating ideas that could offset costs. To begin with, the Society made visits to art exhibitions in Delhi. Those that deserve a special mention include the Tibetan Tangka exhibition at and the ceramic exhibition at Triveni Kala Sangam in February 2010 provided an opportunity to understand the use of various media for creative expression.
We also introduced the concept talks by authorities on art. The talk by leading graphic and apparel designer- Nida Mahmood- in September 2009 brought to focus the scope of a career in the realm of art. The Society also held a workshop on paper-craft by recycling recycle waste paper in February 2010, which was conducted by members of the Society.
The Society is immensely grateful to the Students’ Union Society for the financial aid provided by it for the organization of the most important event in the Society’s annual calendar- festival Artipelago. The two-day festival took place on February 22nd and February 23rd 2010 and comprised four wide-ranging competitions like unconventional media, cartoon making, pencil sketching on an inter-college level. A workshop on pastels by well-known artist, Chaitali Chatterjee was also conducted and enjoyed enthusiastic participation. The annual art exhibition was held on both days of the festival and showcased the artwork by students and teachers of college. The festival which also included an art quiz and a movie screening enjoyed the participation of approximately a hundred students.

(XVII) Informal Discussion Group
The Informal Discussion Group (The IDG) is 50 years old. The year 2009 was remarkably successful with a plethora brilliant guests, regular talks, some new beginnings, some ambitious schemes, and long meetings.
Several brilliant talks were organized. Binayak Sen highlighted the grave nature of public healthcare in India. Karan Thapar gave one of the most entertaining and witty talks in recent times. Other invitees and speakers included Sharmila Tagore, Shyam Benegal and Urvashi Butalia. Arun Shourie’s talk on religion was widely appreciated. Arvind Kejriwal, Shabnam Hashmi, Shiv Shankar Menon, Nafisa Ali and Begum Noor Bano added variety and élan vital to the programmes of the IDG. Akeel Bilgrami gave a fascinating view on Gandhi in the modern world. Alka Acharya enamoured the audience with a refreshing perspective on China. Timeri N Murari, Y.S. Rajan, T.K. Oomen, Khalid Tyabji, Zafar Iqbal and Sam Pitroda were all insightful and incisive.
A new initiative was the effort to start a democratized Discussion Forum where students would collect and talk about themes and concerns of their interest
.

(XVIII) Women’s Development Cell
The Women’s Development Cell has been quite active in the year 2009-2010, with a small but committed group of interested volunteers helping in the organization of its activities, under its staff advisor Dr. Karen Gabriel.
Its main activity was a conference held on the 16th and 17th of November 2009 on the theme “Religion, Politics and Gender in India.” The conference (held in association with Sangat and Kartini) sought to examine the relation between religion as private practice and as public activity in India, and the position occupied by gender in the articulations, tensions, disjunctions, and resolutions present in the discourses surrounding the self/ other, community / nation. This conference brought together many eminent academics and activists- Zoya Hasan, John Dayal, Shabnam Hashmi, Debjani Sengupta, Menaka Guruswamy, Ratna Kapur, Sheeba Aslam, Manisha Sethi, Bidyut Mohanty, Farah Naqvi, P.K. Vijayan and Karen Gabriel – who presented a varied range of papers discussing the nexus of gender, identity, and religion in the social, cultural, and political imagination in India.
The WDC also organized a talk with Jan Myrdal, a writer and literary critic, on the 4th of February 2010, on the topic “Modernity, Autobiography, and August Strindberg.” The talk was centered around explicating and contextualizing the popular notion of the Swedish playwright’s misogyny.

(XIX) Photographic Society
During this year, the Society’s 61st, more workshops have been organized. The Society’s 60th birthday was celebrated with a string of competitions in college leading up to the main event, an exhibition of the works of renowned Stephanian photographers along with the best works of students. Many of our students have an interest in learning photography but never have an opportunity to do so, and hence provisions were made to provide the necessary platform during this academic session.
The activities started in August with a lecture by Pablo Bartholomew, recipient of the World Press Photo Award and celebrated World Photographer with Indian Express. Later a workshop on ‘lights and silhouettes’ by Aditya Arya was held. A significant initiative was the commencement of an informal certificate course on Photography in college, with Andre Fanthome as the instructor. He organized outdoor shooting sessions in Lodi Gardens, Jantar Mantar and Flower Market in Fatehpuri along with the ‘theory’ classes.
‘Frames’ the annual festival of the Society, was not limited to just Delhi University, but was celebrated on a National platform with more than 650 photo entries, by over seventy photographers from colleges across the country. The first phase was a National Online Photography Competition in November, judged by Sandeep Biswas and Neeraj Preeya Darshi, photo editors of Indian Express. The second phase consisted of an exhibition of 24 shortlisted pictures that were framed and displayed in college on the 2nd and 3rd of February along with a workshop on ‘Panoramic Photography’ by Amit Pasricha. A significant achievement this year has been the creation of the Society’s own website, primarily for frames.

(XX) Hiking Club
The year started off with the selections for the College Climbing Team at the Eswaran Bharatan Memorial Wall on 29th August, which saw quite a good response from the first years and even some third years, with more interest coming, as a break from past patterns, from science students. The start of the year also saw the selection of a separate Organizing Committee for the first time in the Hiking Club’s history, which took place with the selections for the climbing team.
The first event of the year was a weekend trek to Nag Tibba near Mussoorie from the 19th to the 21st of September, which provided an excellent opportunity for both first time trekkers and old hats to get a taste of the outdoors. The trek proved to be an excellent experience for the team, being both scenic as well as physically demanding.
The October break saw the Hiking Club organize a serious trekking expedition to Gharhwal in Uttarkhand from the 1st to 13th of October. A team of 7 students, accompanied by our staff advisor, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, and Dr. Phookun, attempted to catch a glimpse of the elusive Chaukhamba on the Ghia Vinayak Pass trek from Uniana to Urugum in the Panch Kedar area of Garhwal. Bad weather prevented them from viewing the peak and the more than 5000-meter high pass itself was crossed under snowfall. Despite many hitches, the trek proved to be an excellent experience, with several breath taking sights on the way.
The second term saw the club organize a natural rock-climbing trip to Damdama in Haryana on the 8th of November. A team consisting of both members and non-members of the climbing team tried their hand at scaling some of Nature’s mini peaks in a ruggedly beautiful setting, accompanied by Dr. Barua and the coach of the climbing team, Rohit Chauhan.
The major event of the year, however, was Hike-A-Mania 2009, the hiking club fest, and the 5th St. Stephen’s Open Sport Climbing Competition, held from the 9th to the 13the of December. The five day blitz saw a variety of events being held with the purpose of giving students a taste of Hiking Club and the world of outdoor sports, ending with a national level sport climbing event. The fest was a huge success, and provided students with a dose of concentrated excitement and physical activity as a break in the routine of college life, while spurring us on to have it on a much larger scale in coming years.
The year 2010 sees the Hiking Club organizing its very popular rafting trips. Based on the tremendous response for the rafting trips organized in previous years by the Club, this year will see two trips being organized on the 20th- 21st and the 27th – 28th of February. The end of the year will see the release of the Hiking Club journal, Miscellany, and preparations for a possible trekking expedition in the summer break.

(XXI) Wildlife Society
The wildlife Society of St. Stephen’s College this year, saw a marked shift away from talks and seminars, towards more practical approaches to conservation and caring for wildlife. The year began with the orientation of first years, which gave them an overview of the kinds of activities the Society conducts. The wildlife Society was one of the very few societies which did not conduct inductions this year and all junior members were equally welcome to participate in the activities of the Society and also to chip in with their ideas.
The tradition of Nature walks started last year was continued with early morning trips to the Kamla Nehru Ridge. The Society also joined hands with Greenpeace India in their attempt to raise a voice against Genetically Modified foods. The members of the Society were instrumental in staging silent protests for the same and a presentation was also conducted in college to make people aware of the dangers of GM Foods. The Society also tied up with IYCN (Indian Youth Climate Network), an initiative of students of Delhi University. A cleanliness drive was conducted with a good number of students from the college taking part in it.
The Society also conducted competitions to get students involved. A Case Study competition was conducted with the objective of making students delve into the complexities of environmental degradation and its solutions. Also an essay writing competition was held in association with Leaders for tomorrow which too received a good response from the student’s body. This was followed by the annual fest “Prakriti”.
During the course of the year, the Society executed many rescues of injured animals. This included all sorts of animals from injured and ill birds to abandoned puppies. Due medical attention was then given to them till they recovered. An innovative paper-cutting workshop was conducted in November. Scrap paper was turned into intriguing pieces of art, which was as fascinating as it was useful as a means of recycling paper. A significant practice which the Society adopted this year was printing or drawing of its own posters on the blank sides of outdated circulars and posters of other societies. This was one small step towards saving paper in college. Other societies were also encouraged to do the same.

(XXII) Bazm-E-Adab Society
We organized a talk by Tina Soni – a popular Pakistani classical ghazal singer on the topic- the fall of Urdu literature in the south Asia and Indo – Pak relations. She also recited some of Ghalib’s ghazals.
Members of the Bazm – e – Adab Society participated in the gazal recitation competition in Kirori Mal College. The members who took part were – Hanmad Zia, Mohammed Satwatullah Khalid, Mohammed Zahid, Samreen & Malmia Dayal.
It organized an inter – college gazal recitation competition for the Ghalib running Trophy. Zakir Hussain College won the Trophy. General individual prizes were also distributed. Ayesha Nissar & Mohd. Satwatullah Khalid compared the programme.
This year we introduced BAIL BAZI Competition for the first time in the history of Bazm- e- Adab Society. Kirori Mal College won the first prize in this competition, Zakir Hussain won the second prize and Jamia Milia Islamia won the third prize
.

(XXIII) Quiz Club
The Quizzing season began with the Quiz Club organizing the Fresher’s Quiz in the first term. The entire process of a written tests and interviews proved fruitful resulting in the selection of “promising” members for the Quiz Club, from amongst the first year junior members.
The next major event in the calendar was the annual quiz fest QUIZOTIC which was held on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of November 2009 respectively. The event managed to draw a huge participation from across the campus. Moreover, the quizmasters Dr. Barua, Pradyumna Jairam, Noel, and Amit Chakravarty maintained the spirit of curiosity with their engaging questions. Arts and Philosophy, Sports, Entertainment and The General Quiz constituted the heart of the fest.
The General Quiz as usual was the climax of the quiz fest. The participants from the National Law School, Bengaluru finished first. The other winners from our college were Chinmay and Nivedita who won the library and History quizzes respectively. Also, Gurnoor, Chinmay and Nivedita Participated in the General Quiz bagging the 3rd Prize.
The junior members of the Quiz Club also kept their interest in quizzing alive by participating in several inter-college events across the campus. Noel and Sujai were recently placed 2nd in the prestigious DCE quiz Panache and 3rd in the General Quiz at SRCC.
The seasons come to an end with the Inter- Departmental Quiz and Rock & Roll Quiz in association with the music Society in the month of February 2010. The prominent Quizzer’s Association also hosted their special quiz in our college premises. The Club would like to thank all its members for their interest and share hard work
.

7.

ROOF RENOVATION
The flip-side of being a long-established institution is the need to maintain an ageing infrastructure. The roofs of many of our buildings needed extensive repair. I wish to acknowledge, in particular, the contributions of Dr. Ashitosh Mathur who, braving the heat of Delhi summer, almost single-handedly organized and supervised the renovation and repair of over 50000 sq. ft of roofs.

8.

STAFF RECRUITMENT
The last regular appointment to the teaching faculty was made as far back as 2003. The teaching work was being managed with a disproportionately large number of ad hoc teachers. The uncertainty to which this consigned the teachers concerned cost us a great deal and we lost a few good teachers. It is a matter of great relief that it has now become possible to appoint teachers against permanent vacancies. I wish to place on record the gratitude of all my colleagues to the Chairman and members of the Governing Body of the College for taking the bold decision to go ahead with filling these vacancies despite the gray areas in law involved. Posts have been advertised and the interviews are due to begin.

9.

THE ALUMNI
Our College is heir to one of the most distinguished alumni networks in this country. Their sterling achievements in diverse fields add lustre to the national and global image of the institution. Belatedly, though, we felicitate Shri. Kapil Sibal on his appointment as Minister of Human Resource Development. On this occasion we also felicitate Prof. Mohammad Amin, former Head, Dept. of History and Shri. Anil Bordia, former student, on their being chosen for the Padhmabhushan award. Mrs. Joy Michael. Mrs. Michael, besides, has been conferred the prestigious national theatre award by the Sangeet Natak Academy fro the year 2009 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to theatre direction. I wish to place on record my sincere appreciation for the work done by the Alumni Executive and thank, in particular Shri. Ved Marwah, its President, Shri. Pobir Sen, its Vice President and Shri. Arvind Malhotra the Secretary. I appreciate the efforts made also by various chapters of the Alumni Association and look forward to greater coordination among them and a more purposive involvement in the life of the College.
I bid ceremonial good-bye to the outgoing Junior Members I pray that the motto of the Gollege, namely, Ad Dei Gloriam, will illumine their path life-long. May you lead a life that adds value to the lives of others and May you be a blessing on our land and the larger world beyond. Jai Hind!
