SUS Elections 2008
After an exciting pre-election week
involving candidates battling it out like vocal gladiators to win
their voting campaigns, the Students Union Society elections for the
2008-2009 session took place finally on the
3rd of September. As always, junior members’ interest, particularly
first years’ who were taking part in an electoral process for the
very first time, was extremely high. Adnan Nayeem Asmi, 3rd Year B.A
Programme won the election for the post of President of the SUS by a
margin of 122 votes against Maryam Fatima of 3rd Year B.A (Hons)
English. This year’s election had more than its usual share of
controversies which saw the elections being postponed twice and
eventually happening nearly two weeks later than schedule. These
included cancellation of Maryam Fatima’s candidature due to
insufficient attendance and later restoration of the same.
The final results for the Presidential election were as follows:
Total Votes: 827
Invalid Votes: 41
Total Valid Votes: 786
Adnan Nayeem Asmi: 454
(57.8%)
Maryam Fatima: 332
(42.2%)
Student Unions in the past have promised to make the SUS more than
just a T-shirt distributing, Harmony organizing body, and so does
this year’s union. Let’s see what happens in what promises to be an
exciting year for the SUS. |
