The BSc. Programme replaced the BSc. General Course
in the year 2005. The first batch of the new course passed out in 2008.
The aims behind replacing the old course were
1. To make it more comprehensive and application
based;
2. To provide students a broad-based exposure to the critical
domains of the sciences i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, in both
single science domain and multiple science domain
modes;
3. To provide students adequate background of Mathematical Sciences,
and tools and techniques such as Computer Applications, Modern
Instrumentation and Electronics, and
Analytical Techniques;
4. To enable students to enhance their technical writing and
communication skills;
5. To provide students adequate exposure to global and local
concerns that explore the many aspects of societal relevance in
Environmental Science; and
6. To give students an opportunity to explore the
multidisciplinarity in science, particularly in those emerging areas
that lie at the intersection(s) of physical, chemical, life and
earth
Sciences including such cutting-edge areas like astrobiology,
theoretical biology, geophysics, molecular paleontology,
biogeochemistry, etc.
The B.Sc. Programme is intended to provide a grounding in several
different areas of science instead of focussing on one. There are
two variants of this programme offered at St. Stephen's College –
B.Sc. Programme (Physical Sciences) in which students
study Physics,
Mathematics, and Chemistry in the second and third years; and B.Sc.
Programme (Applied Physical Sciences) in which students
study Physics,
Mathematics, and Computer Science in the second and third years.
Both streams have a common Foundation Course in the first year
covering Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer
Applications, History of Science, and English.
B.Sc. (Programme) students may go on to do Master's degrees in
Physics, Mathematics, or Chemistry / Computer Science. They are also
well-suited to inter-disciplinary post-graduate programmes and
courses that require a broad background in science.
